Sea turtles are coming ashore. How should we behave?

In order to protect sea turtles, it is necessary to control dangerous activities such as fishing, trawling, diseases, pollution, and speedboats. When a sea turtle is seen coming ashore to lay eggs on the beach, it is requested that the environment be kept dark and quiet, that flash or camera lights not be used, and that people not approach the animal. In Alanya, if this situation is encountered, the authorities of the Alanya Environmental Education Association (ALÇED) or the Alanya Municipality should be notified, and after the authorities secure the area with a protective cage, no intervention should be made in the turtles' journey to the sea as they hatch.

Genel
In order to protect sea turtles, where only about 3% of hatchlings survive to adulthood, and only one out of approximately 1,000 eggs reaches 50 years of age, harmful activities in the sea must be controlled. Fishing, trawling, diseases, pollution, and speedboats pose threats to sea turtles worldwide. So, what should we do, or what should we *not* do, if we see a sea turtle coming ashore to lay eggs on a beach?

HOW SHOULD WE BEHAVE?

- Ensure that the environment is kept dark.
- Please be quiet.
- Do not approach to take pictures, and absolutely do not use flash or turn on the camera light.
- Move to an area where they cannot see you.
- Please inform the relevant authorities for Alanya using the following numbers: Alanya Environmental Education Association (ALÇED): 0242 5133135 or Alanya Municipality: 4448207.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Officials will place a protective cage around the area. The eggs are expected to begin hatching in approximately 60 days, and the baby sea turtles will move towards the sea. Please do not interfere with this process. However, if any turtles become disoriented due to city lighting or for any other reason, you can release them to the seashore.
