Where will tourists be heading in 2021, and under what conditions?

A survey conducted by eDreams Odigeo involving approximately 10,000 people revealed that in 2020, the most significant factor influencing travel decisions was the desire to avoid vacations due to concerns about infection. While women found open spaces more reassuring, men preferred hotels, and younger generations prioritized hygiene measures. The majority of respondents believed that vaccination against COVID-19 was necessary. In 2021, participants indicated a preference for shorter trips and last-minute bookings, and planned to choose well-known destinations or countries declared safe by the government.

Following 2020, a year marked by the Covid-19 pandemic, it is becoming increasingly difficult to predict how people will travel in 2021, a year when vaccines are available and the widespread distribution phase is expected to begin. Thirty-five percent of holidaymakers are hesitant to travel, while 33% are afraid of getting infected. Thirty percent of this group are postponing their trips due to the risk of infection. In 2021, 43% say they will prefer familiar destinations, while 37% want to travel only to countries declared safe by the government.

Will trends be determined by Covid safety?

eDreams Odigeo is attempting to provide an overview of changing travel behavior, the current travel climate, and the future plans of holidaymakers. The study, which interviewed approximately 10,000 people from the United Kingdom, the United States, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Portugal, and Sweden, sought to answer the question "How will people travel in 2021?"

What were the trends in 2020?

Thirty-five point two percent of those who participated in the survey said they were not afraid to travel during that time. On the other hand, 33% of the participants were afraid of getting infected during their travels. This fear was the most significant factor leading 30% of them to cancel their vacations in 2020. Fifty percent of women prefer outdoor spaces, whether on the beach or in the mountains, and they considered these places safe for travel. Men, on the other hand, focused more on private accommodation. Fifty percent of men felt safe in hotels and holiday apartments (40.4%). The behavior of younger generations differed somewhat. Fifty-three point nine percent of those aged 18-24, and 48.9% of those aged 25-34, considered vacations safe based on general safety measures and hygiene regulations. Fifty-seven percent of travelers wanted a guaranteed refund for travel expenses and accommodation in case of cancellation due to Covid-19. In addition, 46% believe that a Covid-19 vaccine is necessary before making reservations for travel abroad again.

What will determine preferences in 2021?

According to the report, which states that hopes for longer vacations are increasing, participants are still cautious when it comes to planning their vacations. They still prefer short trips (28%) and last-minute reservations (41.8%). However, more than a quarter of those surveyed want to plan their vacations in the near future. On the other hand, they are not sure which destination they will choose in 2021. Forty-three percent of travelers say they prefer familiar destinations, while 37% want to travel only to countries classified as safe zones by government authorities.
